I just read this review of a new book collecting examples of American movie criticism over the last century. Sounds like a winner!

One critic I'm sure they didn't include, though, was Robert E. Howard, that fiery Texan who preceded Tolkien into the heroic fantasy genre, created Conan the Barbarian at the age of 26, and shot himself to death four years later. Howard was an avid movie-goer, and his macho review style is miles away from the delicate musings of the Rex Reed set (for better or worse). Here's a review he wrote in 1928, at the age of 22:
