Silent Hill

Saw Silent Hill yesterday. Ugh. I'm fine with a certain amount of horror violence, but here we're treated to such sights as a woman being raped by barbed wire and torn in half, a woman and a 9-year-old girl being slowly roasted to a crisp, a woman being held aloft by her neck as all of her clothing and then her skin are torn off, a woman being severely beaten with pipes.... Notice a trend?

Not only are the female characters excessively brutalized, they're also more sexualized than in most Hollywood fare. All of them are shapely, all of the nurses wear tight, low-cut blouses, the female cop wears fetish-tight leather pants, and when we first see the mother/protagonist, she's running around in hiphuggers and a low-cut, midriff-baring tank-top. (Just like Mom used to wear!) Even the creepy old homeless woman is played by an obviously gorgeous actress in a nappy wig. The director seems more eager to pimp his characters than to humanize them.

On the good side, I also watched Collapse )
